Anastasia By Eric Buechel, Watercolor On Paper, 21.5" x 23.5", 2016
Anastasia
This picture of my daughter was meticulously painted using an airbrush, a technique that allows for a remarkable level of control and precision. In this particular piece, I employed a layering technique that involved carefully applying pigment mixed with drops of gum Arabic into the airbrush reservoir. This method is crucial as it not only enhances the vibrancy of the colors but also contributes significantly to the depth of the painting. The use of gum Arabic, a natural gum made from the sap of the acacia tree, helps to bind the pigments, resulting in a smooth and ultra-refined surface that is characteristic of airbrush art.
In addition to the primary watercolor medium, I incorporated gouache in the lighter areas of the portrait. Gouache, known for its opaque qualities, allowed me to add highlights and subtle nuances that brought my daughter’s features to life. The interplay between the transparent watercolor and the more solid gouache created a dynamic contrast that added dimension to the artwork. When painting a family member, particularly a daughter, there is always a unique emotional weight attached to the task. It’s a delicate balance of capturing her likeness while also conveying the essence of her personality. It can often feel like a gamble—an endeavor that could either resonate deeply or fall flat in the eyes of the subject.
At the time of the painting, she was seventeen years old, a pivotal age filled with both promise and the complexities of adolescence. With that said, you might imagine the risk I took in painting her portrait. The challenge lies not only in the technical execution but also in the emotional connection; it’s a personal interpretation that could be met with mixed feelings. I never received a definitive answer on whether she liked the painting, which adds to the intrigue of the artistic process. However, I remain hopeful that one day, perhaps many years from now, she will look back at this piece with a deeper appreciation for the effort and love that went into its creation.
When the painting was first exhibited, I was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews and the attention it garnered from the audience. Many viewers expressed a keen interest in understanding the techniques I used, particularly the intricate process of working with watercolor. The question that often arose was, "How long did it take you to do it?" To that question, I refrain from providing a straightforward answer, as I believe it’s not merely a matter of hours spent but rather a culmination of a lifetime of hard work and practice. My honest response is that I don’t really keep track of time during the creative process. This is very true; while these tightly painted portraits do require many hours of meticulous work, counting the passing hours doesn’t aid in the completion of the piece.
Yet, there is one other aspect of this painting that I would like to emphasize: my favorite time spent on it was during the layering process. The layering effect is where I find the most satisfaction, as it allows for the gradual build-up of color and texture, creating a rich tapestry that draws the viewer in. Each layer adds depth and complexity, transforming the canvas into a vibrant representation of my daughter. The culmination of this artistic journey is ultimately realized when I see the painting framed and finished, ready to be displayed and appreciated. It is in that moment of completion that I feel a profound sense of accomplishment, knowing that I have captured a fleeting moment in time through my art.
A Father's Lasting Love
By Eric Buechel
So here’s to my daughter, with dreams yet to chase, a bright and vibrant spirit ready to explore the vast world that lies ahead of her. Each day presents a new opportunity, a blank page waiting for her to write her unique story. In the chapters that are yet to be written, may she discover her own place, a sanctuary where her passions ignite and her aspirations flourish. I envision her navigating the winding paths of life, fueled by ambition and guided by her unwavering spirit.
With every heartbeat, through laughter and tears, I’ll stand by her side, a steadfast presence in her journey. In moments of joy, I will celebrate with her, sharing in the exhilaration of her achievements and the sweet taste of success. Conversely, during times of sorrow or disappointment, I will be there to offer comfort, a shoulder to lean on, and words of encouragement to help her rise again. Each experience, whether joyous or challenging, will serve as a stepping stone, shaping her character and resilience.
As she grows, I hope she embraces the beauty of life’s unpredictability, understanding that every twist and turn is a lesson waiting to be learned. I encourage her to chase her dreams with fervor, to pursue her passions relentlessly, and to never shy away from the challenges that may come her way. I want her to know that it is perfectly okay to stumble and fall, for it is in those moments that she will discover her strength and tenacity.
Through all of her years, I will be her unwavering supporter, cheering her on as she takes risks and ventures into the unknown. My love for her is boundless, and I will always be her biggest advocate, reminding her that she is capable of achieving greatness. Together, we will navigate the complexities of life, creating memories that will last a lifetime, filled with laughter, love, and invaluable life lessons. In this enduring love, I find my purpose, and I hope she always carries a piece of it with her, no matter where her journey leads.
