Theotokos

Theotokos is a title for Mary, the mother of Jesus, predominantly used in Eastern Christianity. The typical Latin translations are Dei Genitrix or Deipara. Common English translations include "Mother of God" or "God-bearer," although these differ in literal meaning from the Ancient Greek. Creating this painting was a joy, as I used watercolor and my airbrush to create a soft and delicate surface. In this artwork, I aimed to depict Mary in her heavenly glory. I included a blue gem in her hands, symbolizing the Virgin's purity and representing the skies, marking her as an empress, as blue was linked with Byzantine royalty. The use of gold is likened to rays of light crowning her head, purity, and the prodigal color is related to the generous giving of herself to God's plan. The rosary also hangs in her hand, serving as a significant element in my painting. The purpose of the Rosary is to aid in recalling key events in the history of our salvation. The artwork itself represents the essence of maternal love and divine grace, inviting viewers to engage with its profound themes. EB
